Are app-controlled devices actually worth it or just a gimmick?

I keep seeing app-controlled locks and remote gadgets advertised and I cannot tell if they genuinely add something or are just a novelty that breaks within a month.

For those who have tried them, did the remote element actually make the dynamic better, especially long distance? Or did the reliability issues and battery worries outweigh the fun? I am a bit of a skeptic about putting anything essential behind an app, so honest experiences good and bad would help.

Mixed bag honestly. The remote release for long distance was genuinely fun and added a lot for us. But I would never rely on an app as the only way out. We always keep a physical backup, because apps update, servers go down, and companies vanish. Treat the tech as a bonus layer, never the foundation.

Read up on who is behind the app before you trust it with anything. Some of these have had real security problems, and you are handing over control and sometimes your location data too. Fun toy, bad master. Backup key, always.
