A tab snapped while I was at work and I had to improvise for six hours

Halfway through a Tuesday I felt something give. One of the tabs the lock passes through had snapped clean off. Nothing hurt, nothing was sharp, but the whole thing was suddenly held together by one side and there was an edge where the tab used to be.

I was at work, in an office, with no way to get it off because the key is at home. I spent six hours being extremely careful and then dealt with it in the evening.

Everything is fine. But I would like to know what people do about this in advance, because my plan turned out to be hope.

Which material? That matters more than anything else in this thread. Printed and cast resin tabs fail exactly like this, usually at a stress point, usually with no warning. Metal deforms before it breaks and gives you notice.

Resin. It was a cheap one I bought to see whether I liked the shape before spending more.

There is the answer then. Resin is fine for finding out whether you like a shape. It is not fine for all day every day for months.
