The term “Chastened” means subdued, humbled, or restrained through some corrective measure. It carries the idea that one is conscious of their fault, accepts being somewhat in the wrong, and adopts a suitably low-key, apologetic demeanor because of it. The words “chastity,” “chasten,” and “chaste” share a common origin: castus, the Latin term for “pure.” This purity is mainly sexual—a person is chaste who abstains from sex. “Chastise”, deriving from the Latin castigare (similar to “castigate”) shares with the verb “chasten” its original meaning of “to make pure,” specifically through some form of punishment. Today, “chastise” leans more toward physical correction, while “castigate” is usually used for verbal reprimand. So men who select key holding can be described as seeking to correct their own “impurity” (which is their desire for intercourse). The partners ruling over them and imposing these periods are making them pure; if they also engage in corporal correction, that constitutes further chastisement—meaning one should feel chastened.
