Women view men’s orgasm as proof of femininity in new research
A recent study published in Sex Roles examined how women gauge their sense of success or failure based on whether their male partner reaches climax during sex. The findings indicate that many women interpret a man’s orgasm as validation of his femininity, whereas the lack thereof can signal feminine inadequacy, especially for those sensitive to traditional gender norms. This research builds upon the long-standing cultural idea that good sex requires mutual orgasms. Although these ideals encourage equal pleasure, they also set up expectations that may lead women to feel insufficient when unmet. Women are often conditioned to place their partner’s satisfaction above their own. Participants viewed scenarios where a male partner either did or didn’t orgasm (noted as someone who usually does). After reading, they reported on feelings of achievement, failure, femininity, and masculinity. The survey also measured sexual assertiveness and stress tied to adhering to traditional feminine roles.
